How the Job Price & Profit Calculator Works

Add the direct costs you expect for this job, then include either a fixed overhead amount or an overhead percentage of those job costs. Choose margin when you know how much of the selling price you want to keep as profit. Choose markup when you prefer to add a percentage to your cost.

This calculator gives a practical planning result. Use your own actual costs, review the price before you quote it, and apply the tax requirements that fit your business and location.

Markup vs. Margin

Margin

Margin is the profit portion of the selling price. A 30% margin means 30% of the selling price is profit after the job costs entered here.

Markup

Markup is added to the job cost. A 30% markup does not create a 30% profit margin because the percentage is based on cost, not the final selling price.

Use one clear target

Pick the approach your business uses, check the result, then adjust the percentage to test a few realistic pricing scenarios.

What Counts as Contractor Overhead?

Overhead is the cost of keeping the business running beyond the direct labour and materials for one job. It may include insurance, vehicle costs, office costs, software, administration and other business expenses. This V1 calculator keeps it simple: use a dollar amount or a percentage you already know is appropriate for this job.

Example Job Price Calculation

$7,000 job cost

With no overhead entered and a 30% target margin, the suggested selling price is $10,000 and estimated profit is $3,000.

30% markup instead

Using a 30% markup on that same $7,000 job cost produces a $9,100 selling price and $2,100 estimated profit.

Tax stays separate

When tax is enabled, it is added after the selling price. It increases the customer total but is not treated as contractor profit.

Common Pricing Mistakes

Forgetting overhead

Direct labour and materials are not the whole cost of running a contracting business.

Mixing up margin and markup

A markup percentage and a margin percentage describe different parts of the calculation.

Counting tax as profit

Keep sales tax separate from the price and profit you plan for the job.

Frequently asked questions

Is this contractor job price calculator free?

Yes. It is a free public Quoinvo Contractor Tool with no login, email or company information required.

Should I use margin or markup?

Use the method your business normally uses. Margin sets profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup adds a percentage to the job cost.

Does sales tax increase my profit?

No. This calculator adds optional tax after the suggested selling price and keeps it separate from estimated profit.

Can Quoinvo turn this into a Quote?

The calculator does not save a result. Quoinvo helps contractors organize Quotes, Customers, Jobs, Invoices, Expenses and Payments in the app.
